In 2017, the new Apple Data Centre will start to be built in Foulum near Viborg. The centre will be 100% powered by renewable energy and is said to generate 300 new vacancies. Being the biggest European investment Apple has ever made, the new Data Center will run some of Apple’s most popular services such as itunes store, imessage, maps, Siri and App Store. The large project is meant to help expanding the American company's operations. Another similar centre, but of smaller capacity, will also open in Ireland as part of the company's European growth.
The chance for jobs and internships
The IT students at Dania Academy in Denmark see great potential in this project and already make plans for applying for their dream jobs. They also see a lot of potential in the fact that Viborg is the host of many design and IT companies that have formerly received the support of big names such as Dreamworks and Bioshock Games. The IT and design passionates from The Animation Workshop as well as all the companies from Arsenalet are known to have brought many IT specialists to Viborg, aspect that could represent a great deal of attraction for Apple.
"The fact that Apple is willing to invest in Viborg would mean a great deal for the economy. It aims to create hundreds of new jobs and since there are so many IT programming passionates around here, I would say Apple found the right place to be. There is quite a promissing workforce here in Viborg", says Andreas Daneville, IT technology student in Viborg at Dania.
What IT enthusiasts from Viborg say
Several IT technology students as well as graduates will be waiting for the job wave the project is promissing.
"I see lots of potential for growth here in Viborg and it is so great that Apple is willing to expand here. It would create so many job opportunities for us, IT students. Of course, we will be graduates by the time the centre will be done, but still, we will have the educational background. I see a lot of talent at Dania and I think we could succesfully export that to Apple", says Andreas Daneville, second semester student at Dania.
"I was happy to read the news. It will definitely help the municipality and the people looking for jobs. Also, I see many opportunities for an internship at Apple and since as part of our studies we need to complete an internship, it could be nice to see that people go and try their luck at apple. What we are being taught here at Dania has a great deal of relevance and I think that it qualifies us to directly apply for a job at Apple. The even better thing is that we are also taught the managerial aspects of the IT business and that can offer us a plus", says Johannes Olsen, IT techonoly student at Dania.
It's a big step for a small town! It would be great if Dania and Apple could shake hands" smiles Andreas.
